Why Do Crafts Foster Creativity?

Crafts remain one of our household basics. Although crafting activities can be messy (paint splatters, for example), the positive outcomes make cleaning up worthwhile. Through crafting, children discover their creativity through unique artistic expressions. Making something lovely involves more than creating visual beauty because students experience multiple educational benefits at each creative step.

The following list demonstrates the different ways children develop their creative abilities through crafting activities:

  • Encourages original thought: The process teaches children to discover answers outside traditional boundaries.
  • Children learn problem-solving through figuring out how to assemble items while creating their solutions.
  • The creative process leads students toward multiple possible outcomes since no one approach is correct.
  • Students gain confidence when selecting colors, shapes, and textures for their work.
  • The process allows students to make their own decisions regarding creative elements.
  • Students develop control over their creative work through this process.
  • Cutting, gluing, and painting activities help children develop fine motor skills.
  • Children become curious when they ask themselves what would happen when they combine particular colors.
  • The materials allow children to experiment and discover new effects by transforming errors into joyful incidents.
  • Each child expresses unique things through their crafts, which serve as personal artistic expressions.
  • Resourcefulness develops through using available materials and discovered objects for creation.
  • The practice provides children a protected environment to construct their own stories through their creations.
  • Crafting helps children maintain control of their emotions while providing them with a calming experience.
  • A learning environment allows students to make errors since mistakes are essential in education.
  • The practice of innovation attracts children because they appreciate adding their perspectives to projects.
  • Through this approach, children develop resilience by learning to continue their work despite mistakes.
  • Children enjoy transforming established ideas through their contributions.
  • The process of building resilience in children begins through their experiences with mistakes.
  • Group crafting sessions between siblings promote teamwork.
  • The creative process allows each person to add their individual touch.
  • Each finished piece becomes distinct from others because students can customize their work.
  • Sensory exploration activities incorporate texture, color, and materials that stimulate the senses.
  • Students must dedicate time and effort to complete their work, which requires patience and concentration.
  • Integrating math, science, and art disciplines naturally occurs when making crafts.

When you feel the urge to avoid paints and glue, remember that crafting delivers benefits beyond entertainment. Crafting activities will benefit your child’s development and creative abilities.

Fun Paper Plate Birds Nest Craft for Kids

Your home will welcome the spring spirit with this delightful activity. Let’s get crafting!

Materials You’ll Need

  • Paper plates (2 per craft)
  • Paint (brown, blue, or your chosen colors for the sky and nest)
  • Tissue paper (red and blue for the birds, plus scraps for accents)
  • Googly eyes
  • Small pieces of yellow paper (for beaks)
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Straw or shredded paper (for the nest texture)

Step-by-Step Instructions to Create a Paper Plate Bird Nest

Prepare the Plates:

Paint the first plate blue to create a sky effect while painting the second plate brown to create the nest portion. The assembly process can start after the painted paper plates are completely dry.

Assemble the Nest:

The two plates can be joined by stapling or gluing, and the brown-painted paper plate will be positioned as the nest base. Adding straw or shredded paper gives the nest its realistic appearance.

Create the Birds:

Cut red and blue tissue paper into small pieces that can be handled easily. Fold the tissue paper before applying it to your bird shapes for a realistic texture. You can create bird shapes by gluing tissue paper pieces onto oval cardstock shapes.

Add Details:

Attach googly eyes and little yellow paper beaks to give your birds unique personalities. Your child can decide how to position them—are they singing, snuggling, or just hanging out?

Finalize the Craft:

Place your birds inside the nest by gluing them next to the straw or shredded paper. Add any final details, such as straw sticking out, for a realistic appearance.
