Snake Paper Plate Craft

Spread the love

One of my favorite things to do with my kids is crafting. I love to make it simple yet creative. If you are looking for an easy craft to do with your kiddos, then paper plate crafts are a really great go to. You can buy a hand full of paper plates at the Dollar- Tree. Add in some paint, googly, eyes, and accessories, and the possibilities are endless! In this article, I will be sharing with you how to create this fun snake paper plate craft for kids.

Benefits of Crafting with Your Kids

I am a type B person married to a type A. For the longest time, my husband was not on board with the creative craftiness that my kids loved to get into. That is why we would wait until he was at work. The mess drove him nuts. On the other hand, I see it as an expression of creativity that kids need. Whether you embrace creative messes, or they make you cringe, there are so many benefits that come with crafting with your kids. Here are several:

  • Gives your child and yourself the opportunity to stretch that creative muscle!
  • Being able to create something that is just theirs, that came from their mind, can give your child a boost in self-esteem.
  • Crafting promotes the use of fine motor skills.
  • Additionally, crafting instills a sense of patience in your child (and you!)
  • Creating a craft can encourage problem-solving skills.
  • Social skills, if your child is crafting with another person, are promoted.
  • Bonding is another big plus!
  • Encourages the ability to be flexible, especially when things don’t turn out the way they saw in their minds.

These are just a few of the fun and important skills that can develop in your child and yourself as you craft together. So, don’t be afraid to break out that paint and maybe even glitter!

Materials for Open-Ended Crafting

I’m a big fan of open-ended crafts. While those cookie-cutter crafts have a time and a place, they really don’t promote creativity. Instead, they promote following the rules and staying inside the lines. (also, important!) However, the best way to encourage creativity and thinking outside of the lines in your child is by offering them opportunities for open-ended crafting. To do this, all you need are a few different types of materials, a table or area of the home that you don’t mind getting messy, and their imagination!

I once read a book about homeschooling where the mom left a craft table out for her kids. She would replenish this table every few days or weeks. Her kids would have the opportunity to create any time of the day. While this isn’t always possible for families to do, you can still have a good amount of materials available for your child to engage in open-ended crafts. These materials don’t have to break the bank either. Here are several ideas:

  • Blank paper
  • Cotton balls
  • Puff balls
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Buttons
  • Glitter
  • Stickers
  • Foam stickers
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Construction paper
  • Popsicle sticks
  • Sequins
  • Googly eyes
  • Playdough
  • Rocks
  • Paintbrushes
  • Paint
  • Fake flowers
  • Leaves
  • Shells
  • Markers
  • Yarn
  • String

This is just a small example of items you can use for open-ended crafting.
