One of my favorite ways to introduce letters to my young kids is by doing little unit studies. These can include fun and simple activities that include things like games, playing with playdoh, making crafts, or videos. For example, if we are learning about the letter H, I could come up with a craft or activity including the following topics:
- Horse
- Hats
- Honey
- Hedgehog
- Hamster
- Hammerhead shark
- Hippopotamus
- Harbor seal
- Hare
- Hawk
- Hermit crab
- Hummingbird
There are so many different options! I choose a topic, say a hummingbird, then come up with a craft (The simpler the better) for my preschooler to make. Paper plate crafts are some of our favorite ones to make because they are pretty easy to put together. Additionally, I check our local library and our own collection for books that go along with my topic. I will also look at videos and songs on YouTube that teach my kids about the topic or incorporate fun catchy songs.
The possibilities are really endless when it comes to putting together fun and engaging (but simple and free) unit studies for your kiddos.
Of course, while these printables go great with unit studies, they can also be used as a fun way to introduce letters to toddlers and preschoolers.
Simply print the coloring page, let your toddler or preschooler color. You can go through each picture on the pages, even ask them if they know what each one is. It really can be that simple and fun!

Homeschooling Preschool
Are you thinking about homeschooling preschool? One trap that homeschooling parents can fall into is trying to recreate the public school system. This sometimes even extends to preschool. But, preschool can be no pressure. Preschoolers are still very young. Making learning fun is one of the best ways to get them excited about school.
Preschoolers learn best through hands on activities and playing. Adding in plenty of play and exploration is a great way to learn. You can introduce the letters to preschoolers with the tips I mentioned earlier in this post. But you can also add in hands on activities, such as sensory bins, games, and more.
Sensory bins are some of our favorite things to do with Miss L. It doesn’t have to be fancy, even a simple tote bin filled with rice, beans, and more is a perfect activity for kids. Here are a few of our favorite sensory bin ideas:
